MONROE — A last-second shot by Monroe was off the mark on Friday, and Oakland held on for a 58-56 victory in a Central Valley Conference boys basketball game.
The fourth-ranked Oakers (14-1, 4-0 CVC) were led by Colton Brownson who had 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Austin Madden had eight rebounds and eight points. Jacob Brooksby pitched in nine points and five assists.
Midway through the fourth quarter Oakland trailed by 11 points with five minutes remaining.
Brooksby’s layup with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation gave Oakland a two-point lead. Monroe hit two free throws to tie the game shortly after.
Triston Mask had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers in four possessions that put the Oakers up by one.
Mask hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining which gave the Oakers a two-point lead. Oakland got a defensive stop and then missed two free throws. Then Zach Young missed a contested lay-in at the buzzer.
Monroe’s Young had a game-high 24 points, but went 6 of 12 from the free-throw line.
The Oakers trailed 14-4 early in the first quarter.
“Everybody is tough on every night in league, even when we didn’t play great, getting the win is going to prove big for us," Oakland coach Jeff Clark said. "We got to bounce back tomorrow to play Regis to finish the weekend off."
Oakland plays Regis at home Saturday at 5 p.m.
