Chase Joyce ran for 157 yards and four touchdowns to lead Crane to a 50-6 victory over North Douglas in the first round of the Class 1A eight-man football playoffs on Friday at Valentine Field in Crane.
North Douglas (5-5) had its season end with the loss, the third straight for the Warriors. It was the third time in the last four years that Crane has ended the Warriors’ season.
“Two of our defensive starters (Wyatt McDaniel and Killian Bond) got banged up,” N.D. coach Rocky Rodgers said. “It was a real physical game.”
Crane rushed for more than 300 yards and got a defensive touchdown as well. Joyce, a junior, scored three times in the first half when the Mustangs (8-2) built a 22-6 advantage.
Joyce’s first scoring run, a 24-yarder, was capped by a two-point conversion and Crane never trailed.
N.D. senior Cal Parks made it 8-6 with a 4-yard scoring run, but the Warriors struggled to get much going on offense. Quarterback Tyler Kallinger ran for 80 yards on 15 carries, while Parks managed 52 yards on 16 attempts.
Joyce’s fourth TD run, a 19-yard dash in the third quarter, made it 30-6.
“They scored a couple touchdowns late in the fourth when we had most of our backups in, getting them some playing time,” Rodgers said. “It just wasn’t our night.”
It was Rodgers’ first season guiding the Warriors after five seasons at Riddle. The Warriors’ first three losses were by 16 points, but they were outscored 96-12 in their final two games.
“It was a fairly good season,” Rodgers said. “Things could have went a little better here and there. For my first year here, we had some growing pains with the coaching change and the change of pace in what we do. For the most part the kids bought into what we do.
“They’re very respectable kids, very well mannered. Me and the coaching staff really enjoyed ourselves and we’re appreciative of the North Douglas administration and the community for the opportunity to come here and do what we do.”
Crane will play either Elgin or St. Paul in the quarterfinals.
