ASTORIA — So what if Glide had to go overtime against Knappa in the first round of the Class 2A football playoffs on the artificial turf at CMH Field.

It was the results that truly mattered, as the Wildcats handed No. 4 Knappa a 48-42 loss. It is Glide’s first playoff victory since 1982.

The Wildcats (6-4) will face No. 5 Santiam (8-1) in the quarterfinals next weekend. Santiam, the 2A runner-up in 2017, defeated Toledo 60-0 in the first round. Knappa finished its season 8-2 overall.

Senior Zach Holland played for the first time in three weeks and gashed the Loggers for 244 yards rushing and scored six touchdowns for the Wildcats, including the game-winner in overtime. Wyatt Estrada added 91 yards and had an interception and Dillon Towne was disruptive along the defensive line for Glide.

“We hung in there and they couldn’t stop our run,” GHS coach Jody Doty said. “It was nice to have Zach Holland back this week.”

Knappa tied the game late in the fourth quarter at 42 to force overtime, and Glide put the lessons learned from back-to-back one-possession losses to good effect.

“We have a bunch of seniors on this team and they came right up and said we’re going to win this,” Doty said. “They came right out and shut them down, and I think it was two plays and we were in the end zone.”

After Glide won the coin toss at the start of overtime, the Wildcats chose to go on defense first. Estrada came up with his interception to end Knappa’s possession.

Caidyn Cunningham then hit Holland with a 22-yard pass for the winning score.

The Wildcats trailed 14-6 at the half, but the game featured each team answering the other's scoring plays.

“We did (learn from the close losses) and we challenged those kids up at halftime,” Doty said. “We told them this is no consolation game, there’s nothing to hold back, we have to go out and win it.”

Glide snapped a three-game losing streak. The Wildcats' last playoff win was a 15-14 victory over Central 15-14 in the first round in the 1982 playoffs.
