MONROE — A slow start by Oakland helped Monroe to a 40-35 Central Valley Conference girls basketball win on Friday evening.

Cassidy Jones had a double-double in the loss. The senior post scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds. Grace Witten led the Oakers (13-2, 3-1 CVC) with 13 points.

Monroe (11-2, 4-0) went up 16-6 after the first quarter, including 11 points by Kyndal Martin. Oakland fought back and came within four points, but back-to-back 3-pointers for Monroe changed the momentum of the game

"We did what we could to get back into it, but that was a tough hole to get out of," Oakland coach Don Witten said. "I'm really proud of the way the kids came together and with Cassidy's performance filling in at the point."

Jones had to step in when senior Hadley Brooksby sustained a foot injury. She's the Oakers' top scorer.

Martin had a game-high 19 points in the game for the Dragons.

Oakland will host Regis at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
