HILLSBORO — Even though the Roseburg High girls basketball team dropped a 56-31 nonleague decision to Century on Saturday, head coach Dane Tornell was pleased with how his undersized Indians competed against the Jaguars.

"They were impressive, but I liked what we did defensively against a team that was much bigger," he said. "We're learning how to work together and trap people, and we had only 12 turnovers."

Angela Baltazar scored 16 points for the Jaguars, who were playing their season opener. Amy Walkenhorst, a 6-6 junior, had 12 points and Janelle Maligaya added 13.

Rylee Russell led Roseburg (1-2) with eight points and Jazz Murphy had six. Russell hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Century led 31-18 at halftime.
