SUTHERLIN — The South Umpqua Lancers didn't roll over for the Sutherlin Bulldogs in Saturday's matchup at the fourth annual Bill Spelgatti Invitational.

Sutherlin posted a 19-point girls basketball win over South Umpqua, 52-33, but the Lancers made the hosts work for it at the Dog Pound.

"They did a great job," Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said of the Lancers. "I actually think they outplayed us for well over half the game. We shot a lot better from the outside than them and that was the difference. And Carmen Ganger really started playing well late in the third quarter and early in the fourth — kind of like we expected the last two days."

Ganger, a 5-foot-10 junior post, scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs (2-1), who bounced back from Friday's 22-point loss to Warrenton. Ganger scored 16 points in the second half and hit three of Sutherlin's seven 3-pointers.

"We wanted to focus on that today, trying to get her more involved," Grotting said. "That's huge for us, that's our inside kid right now. She's a super nice kid and sometimes doesn't demand the ball enough. We made her demand it."

Sophomore guard Jadyn Vermillion, playing against her former South Umpqua teammates for the first time on the hardwood after transferring over the summer, added 11 points. Freshman Sierra Nielsen chipped in six points and Abby Masterfield chipped in five for the Bulldogs.

"We got a lot better the whole tournament," Grotting said. "The freshmen are coming along well."

Shalyn Gray scored 15 points for the Lancers (1-2), who missed 14 free throws. Skylee Gibson and Aneykah McCall each chipped in seven points.

Sutherlin will play in the Harrisburg Tournament next weekend. South Umpqua will host North Valley Tuesday.
