Camas Valley senior Jazmin Wilberg and Glide sophomore Dillon Towne each came away with titles on the first day of the OSAA track and field championships Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Wilberg won the Class 1A girls long jump with a best of 16 feet, 5 3/4 inches, well off her personal record of 17-9. Days Creek freshman Moriah Michaels finished sixth at 15-4 (tying her PR).

“I think Jazmin was a little tense today,” said C.V. head coach Ron Pope. “But the important thing was to get the ‘W’ and she accomplished that.”

It was Wilberg’s first state crown in the event.

Towne captured the 3A boys shot put, heaving the iron ball 49-3 1/2. His PR is 53-2 1/2.

“It was pretty cool,” Towne said of his first state championship. “The prelims were a little shaky, I threw nowhere near what I’ve been throwing. But as the competition started to progress I knew I had to start throwing well. Jacob Blackburn (of Burns, the runner-up at 48-9 1/2) was on my tail the whole time and pushed me.

“For a sophomore to go against a bunch of seniors and win is a pretty good feeling.”

Towne will go for a second state title in the discus Friday. He’s the top seed at 161-4.

Glide sophomore Kaylee Hendron placed third in the 3A girls discus (117-1).

Wilberg, who will be a college heptathlete, also finished sixth in the javelin (111-7) and advanced to the 100-meter hurdles final with the top qualifying time (15.64). She’ll be favored to win the triple jump (36-5 1/2) Friday.

Oakland senior James Morhain finished second in the 2A boys pole vault (13-3/4, PR). Camas Valley junior Derek O’Connor finished third in the 1A boys 3,000 (9:31.43, PR).

Riddle senior Moana Gianotti was denied of her third 2A girls discus championship, finishing third despite a season best (131-9). Junior Catylynn Duff of Culver won the event (138-7) and senior Talia Whitmore of Elgin was second (134-11).

Gianotti will compete for her first state shot put crown Friday.

Yoncalla’s Sean Keenan, a senior at North Douglas, placed fifth in the 2A boys long jump (20-3 3/4, PR). He also advanced to the 100 final with a time of 11.85.

Other Douglas County placers Thursday included freshman Evan Gaskell of Days Creek in the 1A boys long jump (fifth, 19-4 3/4); junior Tristan Ware of Glendale in the 1A boys high jump (sixth, 5-10); and senior Skyler Shadbolt of Oakland in the 2A boys shot (eighth, 43-4 1/2).
