OAKLAND — In a long awaited matchup, 138-pound Oakland senior Jeremiah Cranley pinned Myrtle Point’s P.D. Matthews in 5:32 at Wednesday’s league wrestling dual.

“I had to dig deep. I had never wrestled him before, but I knew it was going to be hard,” Cranley said. The win gave Cranley a 10-9 overall record and a good indication of the competition he’ll face at the district meet.

It’s Cranley’s second year with the Oakers. The team, under the guidance of coach Leon Carl, is trying to rebuild its program.

“This is the first year I’m coaching that we’ve had returners and you can tell they’re getting better,” Carl said. “Today all of our returners won.”

Will Powell pinned Myrtle Point’s Jesus Alvarado (160) in 1:11 and Austin VanHouten won a 17-2 decision (152) over Reedsport’s Brady Dexter.

“The team is my support system,” Cranley said. “Wyatt (Smith) and I practice together and he got his first win. It’s great to be able to share that with a team.”

Smith defeated Reedsport’s Yesina Velasquez (132) with a fall at 3:02. He fell in the first matchup of the day to Reedsport’s Divinity Farris, when he was pinned in 2:51.

Cranley continues to wrestle because of the bonds he’s formed, but also because of the results he has seen from his dedication to the sport.

“It’s one of the harder things I’ve ever done,” Cranley said. “You can see results when you work hard.”

Powell said he hopes that the Oakers can place at the district meet.

Riddle only had one wrestler compete in the dual: Chase Rodgers. He lost an 11-1 decision to Reedsport’s Christian Solomon in the 106-poundmatch.

Myrtle Point wrestlers Jacob Bowman (120) and Tyler Huerta (126), along with Reedsport’s Fisher Wahl (126) and Devin Lichte (170), all have experience wrestling at the state championship level. Huerta and Lichte each got a win, while Bowman fell to Reedsport’s Carson Keith in 1:51 and Wahl fell to Myrtle Point’s Clifford Johnson in 39 seconds.

Oakland’s Van Houten and Powell also made it to the state championships in 2016.

Cranley, Verity Glance and Caitlyn Yates were honored before the match as it was senior night for the Oakers at the Nut House.

Yates fell to Myrtle Point’s Jesus Alvarado in 43 seconds in the 160-pound matchup, while Glance fell in 1:08 to Reedsport’s Brady Dexter in the 152-pound match.
