The Roseburg High wrestling team had its first home meet of the season in a double-dual with Southwest Conference foes South Eugene and Sheldon at Robertson Memorial Gym Thursday night.

The Tribe defeated South Eugene, 84-0, and followed with a 69-6 victory over Sheldon.

Only two Roseburg wrestlers had contested matches against South Eugene as the Axe brought a very small team to the meet. Varrius Scanlon (132 pounds) defeated Eli Oshatz in 1:22 and Tristin David (145) pinned Owen Hefflefinger in 1:35.

The Sheldon dual had more competition and actually started with an Irish win as Rudy Zambrano pinned Roseburg’s Tylen Green at 126.

Roseburg went on to win the rest of the matches, with pins from top-ranked Tristin David (145) and Austin David (152) along with Scanlan, Caleb Jeffers (138) and Ethan Stoner (182). Roseburg also got wins by decision from Hunter Blix (220), Hunter Hillard (195) and Mason Labahn (285).

Labahn defeated 10th-ranked Oscar Atterbury with two seconds remaining in overtime on a contested stalling penalty against Atterbury. The decision brought the Roseburg crowd to its feet and drew criticism from Sheldon coaches.

The unranked Labahn was coming off of a strong performance in the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, California, where he defeated the 19th-ranked wrestler in the state from North Medford.

When asked about Labahn getting a lack of respect from the state rankings, RHS coach Steve Lander replied, “He’ll earn his respect, and he showed that tonight against a tough opponent.”

Blix also went three rounds with Sheldon’s Benjamin Lutz. Blix earned two points for a late takedown to earn a 3-1 decision. Blix credited his win to the strong Roseburg conditioning program and said, “I had more heart, and I wrestled a full six minutes tonight, that’s what did it for me.”

While Roseburg largely coasted against the two Eugene foes, the Tribe faces stiff competition in Class 5A powerhouse Crook County Saturday at home.

“They’ll be just about all we can handle,” Lander said of the Cowboys of Prineville.

Roseburg is ranked No. 1 by Oregon Wrestling Forum and is No. 2 behind Newberg in the OSAAtoday 6A coaches’ poll. Crook County is No. 1 in 5A.
