SUTHERLIN — Aimee Smith scored 23 points as the Salem Academy girls basketball team rolled past South Umpqua 56-13 Thursday in the Bill Spelgatti Invitational.

Grace Brown added 12 points for the 3A Crusaders, who led 33-5 at halftime. Sophomore Aaliyah Rudy had six points for the Lancers in their season opener, hitting two 3-pointers. Megan Kinney chipped in three points and 10 rebounds.

“The score doesn’t show it, but this was one of the best games this group has played,” said South Umpqua coach Keri Vermillion. “I wanted them to play together, have fun and play under control, and they did that. Defensively, we wanted to protect the paint but they (Crusaders) shot well from the outside.”
