SALEM — South Umpqua freshman Jadyn Vermillion had a strong performance, highlighted by a win in the girls 400 meters, at the Meet of Champions track and field meet Saturday at Willamette University.

Vermillion clocked a personal record 1:00.20 in the one-lap race. She outdueled two other freshmen: McKenzie Probst of Oakridge (1:02.06) and Melia Morton of Philomath (1:02.83).

Vermillion also finished third in the 200 (27.30) and long jump (16-10 3/4).

The S.U. girls 4x400 relay of Hasina Lathan, Bethany Kalebaugh, Ashanti Potter and Vermillion placed sixth in 4:29.37, a season best. Chris Martinez finished seventh in the boys 100 (12.02).
