SWEET HOME — The South Umpqua Lancers dropped a 4-3 decision to Sweet Home in nine innings in a Class 4A play-in baseball game on Thursday.

"It was a great game on both sides," said S.U. coach Steve Stebbins. "We had opportunities to win offensively, but couldn't get the big hit. Our kids did a good job of not giving up on the season and finishing decent."

Bailey Johnson struck out eight batters and walked two for S.U. (12-14 overall) before being relieved by Cody Gray in the ninth. Gray took the loss.

South Umpqua finished with seven hits. Gray and Anthony Rondeau had doubles.

The Lancers took the lead in the third inning with a run and added two more runs in the fourth inning to make it 3-1. Keanu Aiona hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Huskies (18-5) to tie up the game.

Sweet Home's Keegan Holly advanced to second base on a passed ball and then moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning. The Lancers intentionally walked two batters to load the bases, then Colton Smith hit an RBI single for Sweet Home to end the game.
