Source One Serenity, a Roseburg nonprofit, was awarded a Sustainable Oregon 2022 Award on Nov. 17 from the Association of Oregon Recyclers.
Founded in April 2016, Source One Serenity’s mission is to “empower Veterans to reclaim their sense of purpose through fly-fishing and conservation work.” According to the press release, this nonprofit “also led a grassroots effort in rural Oregon that targets an impactful material: food waste.”
Elena and Rusty Lininger, leaders of the organization, developed a plan to make worm castings through a social enterprise called “Heal Terra.”
Food waste collection and composting, core elements of the Lininger’s plan, fell within the associations materials management category.
Source One Serenity was nominated by Cathy Brown of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s Eastern Region.
According to the press release, Brown felt the need to highlight this winner and their efforts that extend beyond materials and sustainability.
