Hello from Coastal Douglas County! Reedsport / Winchester Bay checking into the Chamber Corner to let you know what’s been going on and what is coming up. Even though summer has come to a close, things are not slowing down here on the Coast.

One of the most exciting pieces of news is the completion of the Reedsport boat launch rehabilitation project just in time for the busy fall fishing season. If you visit the Rainbow Plaza Boat Launch you will be treated to a wider, less steep, launch, all new pilings and new aluminum docks. Don’t worry about parking because there is a brand-new parking lot with ample space as well as a new restroom facility, picnic area and fish cleaning station. This project has been years in the making and thanks to a great deal of persistence and hard work it has come to fruition and it is spectacular!

While we are on the subject of fishing, the very successful Gardiner, Reedsport, Winchester Bay S.T.E.P. Salmon Derby should be mentioned. This Labor Day Weekend was their 25th Annual Event. There were 340 anglers that participated in the Salmon Derby and 83 salmon were caught. The winner of the largest salmon caught was for a 28.4 pound Chinook while the prize for smallest legal salmon was handed out for a 1.9 pound jack Chinook. To see photos of the largest salmon caught, smallest salmon caught, and some of the fun in between make sure to visit the Gardiner, Reedsport, Winchester Bay STEP Facebook page.

Labor Day Weekend also served as host to Art By The Bay which included more than 60 Pacific Northwest Artists, delicious wineries, and music in the park. Brand new for 2018; a beer garden, distillery, free evening concert at the Marina Activity Center, strolling balloon artist and more. The variety and quality of goods available was astonishing. No matter what your taste, there was something for everyone.

The weekend preceding was the 26th Annual Kool Coastal Nights Car Show which was filled to capacity with some beautiful classic cars. The overall winner this year was a stunning bright orange 1937 Ford Tudor with a small matching pull-behind trailer. It was definitely not an easy choice for the patrons with nearly 200 participating vehicles to choose from.

A new event was hosted this year in our blossoming Old Town Reedsport. The Friday Night Old Town Wine Down and Trick or Treat happened on Friday, October 12th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm with a turnout that no one could have expected. There were 17 participating businesses on Fir Avenue that handed out candy to the children and offered small tastings of wine to the adults. More than 200 adults showed up and nearly 150 children for a night of family-fun. Aside from the wine and trick-or-treating many businesses offered some extra fun activities to keep everyone engaged and having a wonderful time. Blooming Rustic offered goodie bag decorating while Mirror, Mirror Beauty Salon was doing face painting and Reedsport Massage had fun photo backdrops and props for some memorable pictures. Other businesses included Bayside Bargains, Creative Mercantile, Defeat River Brewery, Designs at Your Door, Ellie’s Art & Sign, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Mal & Sietz Realty, Mindpower Gallery, Reedsport Antiques, Rust’d Star, Sid’s Carving, Sugar Shack Bakery and Timber Faller’s Daughter. Lower Umpqua Hospital also had a strong presence; generously providing snacks, water, glow bracelets and helpful information. Our community really came together for a night of family fun that we are excited to make an annual event.

The Friday Night Old Town Wine Down and Trick or Treat was such a great success that we are having another similar event to get in the holiday spirit. On Friday November 30th the Reedsport / Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Friday Night Old Town Holiday Family Social. Bring the whole family down for an evening in Old Town Reedsport. Not only can you enjoy the many businesses along Fir Avenue, but on Friday and Saturday you can visit the 57th Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Reedsport Community Center, located at 451 Winchester Avenue. Friday, November 30th, visit the Holiday Bazaar from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Saturday, check out the Bazaar from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free, vendors are plentiful and diverse, there will be raffles, door prizes and the kids can visit with Santa!

Thursday, December 6th, make sure you visit our local businesses for a Moonlight Madness sale. Some local businesses will be staying open late and having specials to help get you ready for the holidays. Check the Reedsport / Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce Facebook page for updates on all the events listed and more. Hope to see you soon in Western Douglas County.
