A Winston man accused of sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl pleaded not guilty in Douglas County Circuit Court on Wednesday.

Michael Earl Short, 54, is charged with two counts of first-degree sex abuse and two counts of first-degree sodomy.

Short used to babysit the girl he is accused of molesting while her parents were at work.

He denied the allegations to police, claiming amnesia.

Short said he wasn’t calling the girl a liar but said that he didn’t remember doing anything to her, according to court documents.

Police gave Short a polygraph test that determined he had lied. Short said he didn’t understand, but if the polygraph said he was lying he must have done something, according to court documents.

Short’s trial is set for Sept. 26.
