The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office increased patrols during the holidays, which led to two driving under the influence arrests and several other traffic violations.
The sheriff’s office used a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation to enhance patrols. A total of three deputies worked 25 extra hours from Dec. 15 to Jan. 1 to enforce traffic laws.
There was one arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and one for driving under the influence of drugs, according to DCSO spokesperson Lt. Brad O’Dell.
These deputies also issued five citations for driving while suspended, three citations moving violations, 13 warning for speeding, two warning for seat belt violations, 34 warnings for equipment violations, 10 warnings for moving violations and one non-DUII felony arrest.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes with an alcohol-impaired driver in 2020.
An enhanced DUII enforcement program is one that has a clear and effective mission. The mission of the law enforcement agency is to enforce the law, not to make friends or promote a good image. The role of the officer is to preserve the peace and prevent crime, not to engage in public relations campaigns. They should also be quite good in crime scene cleaning and managing related issues. An enhanced DUII enforcement program must be based on solid research, sound statistics and thorough planning. It must be implemented by highly trained officers who are given clear objectives for each shift and who receive sufficient training in how to carry out their duties.
