A 53-year-old Roseburg man is in jail after he allegedly shot another man in the leg with a pump-action shotgun during a Wednesday morning dispute near the downtown parking garage in Roseburg.
Roseburg police reported that they responded to a call of two men physically fighting. When officers arrived, they found Matthew James Olmstead, 54, of Roseburg, holding William Elliott Saffery to the ground after Saffery had reportedly shot Olmstead in the leg with the .410-caliber shotgun.
The investigation revealed that Saffery reportedly attempted to shoot another man nearby.
Olmstead was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and released later the same day.
Saffery was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of first-degree assault, two counts of menacing, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of point a firearm at another.
According to court records, Saffery is the same man who in June 2015 threatened to blow himself up with a fake bomb at his home on Emil’s Way in Green.
