The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday it’s investigating a claim that last week’s shooting in Tenmile was self defense.

The investigation continues into the shooting, which occurred at 6:38 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Degnath Gateway Lane.

Police identified the man who was shot as Kevin Eugene Welker, 57. He was shot between the legs by his 56-year-old neighbor Kevin Dewayne Duckworth, according to unofficial scanner reports.

No arrests have been made. Police said the two men were in an ongoing neighborhood dispute. In 2017, Duckworth had faced charges in connection with allegations he had hit Welker with a shovel and punched him in the head. The charges were dismissed.

The dispute between the two men involved Duckworth’s allegations that Welker would empty his water truck and flood the area, making it difficult for him to chop down lumber.

Welker was taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield. As of Wednesday morning he was in critical condition. No information about his condition was available Saturday.
