The Democratic Party of Oregon is looking for candidates for Senate District 1.

Democratic precinct committee persons will hold a convention in Bandon on May 5 to nominate a candidate for the seat, which was until recently held by Jeff Kruse of Roseburg. Kruse resigned in March following allegations of sexual harassment.

Winston Republican Dallas Heard is currently serving as interim senator, and has also received the Republican nomination for the post.

In the November election, Heard will face whoever the Democrats nominate at their convention. The winner will serve out the remainder of what was Kruse’s term, until 2020.

Democratic Party of Oregon Chairwoman Jeanne Atkins urged prospective candidates who meet the minimum requirements to apply.

“This is an opportunity for Democrats in Senate District 1 to step up and represent our party’s values in the upcoming election,” Atkins said. “From what we’ve seen around the nation, no traditionally ‘red’ district is safe. Voters are looking for an alternative to the Trump agenda and eager for change.”

To qualify, candidates for the nomination must have been registered Democrats for at least 180 days before March 15, when Kruse resigned. They also must not be under the control of the Department of Corrections. And they must live in the district, which includes portions of Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties.

The Oregon Legislature has published an interactive online map that allows you to type in your address to see what district you are in. To access it, go to oregonlegislature.gov/FindYourLegislator/leg-districts.html

Candidates must file their applications for candidacy with the Democratic Party of Oregon by 5 p.m. on May 2. The forms are available online at dpo.org/SD1 and may be submitted by mail to 232 NE 9th Ave., Portland, OR 97232, by fax at 503-224-5335 or email to operations@dpo.org.

Candidates must attend the May 5 convention, which will be preceded by a candidate forum from 10 a.m. to noon at Bandon High School, 550 9th St., SW, Bandon.
