Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the U.S. House, has endorsed Roseburg Republican Alek Skarlatos in his race against Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Springfield, for the Fourth District seat.

“Alek Skarlatos is a true hero and the right man to take on Peter DeFazio, a do-nothing Democrat that has lived off the taxpayers’ dime for over 30 years,” McCarthy said in a written statement. “I’m proud to support his candidacy and look forward to working with him in Congress for years to come.”

It’s the latest in a string of endorsements for Skarlatos from Republicans in Congress.

Most notably he has previously been endorsed by House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Skarlatos told The News-Review Monday he believes he’s getting attention at the national level because he’s made the Fourth District race competitive.

“We’re very excited about it,” he said. “I just think that they realize that we stand a very good chance to beat Peter DeFazio, and they want to help us across the finish line.”

Other recent endorsements have come from Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-Florida; Michael Waltz, R-Florida; Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, and Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas.

Some endorsers cited Skarlatos’ military experience — he’s an Army National Guard veteran — and his role in thwarting a would-be terrorist on a Paris-bound train in 2015. That event led to Skarlatos starring as himself, alongside friends who also participated, in the Clint Eastwood-directed movie “15:17 to Paris.”

Anyone else find it interesting how all the big name politicians we hear about in the paper endorsing him are always people OUTSIDE of Oregon? Thats not really anything to brag or celebrate about when you can't name many people like that in the actual state your running in a position for. I can name about 10 big name people the paper has reported on him being endorsed by in other states. The only big name in Oregon I can name off the top of my head is Dallas Heard, who Alek seems to idolize and worship as some type of god based on his facebook postings. Anyone thats not a fan of Heard should think twice before voting for Alek unless you want a mini me of him.

Umpquabob

Would you prefer him to be endorsed by do-nothing merkley or the New Yorker, Wyden? At least this guy lives here and isn't a Washington insider. I suspect he knows more what Oregon needs than the invisible man and the New Yorker.

My point is what good are these people doing for him? Two people endorse him from Florida? Are the people from Florida voting for him? It just seems silly to brag about it all. Once again the News Review can't write an article about him without the tiresome "hero" story with the "two friends" who don't have names anymore apparently because take that away and there isn't anything else to talk about regarding him.

There are no "big name" Republicans in Oregon. None.

Daniel

McCarthy would endorse the Devil himself so long as he registered as a Republican. So what?

George Weston

It would only be news if someone from the democratic party leadership endorsed him.
