A woman is dead and two other Riddle residents, missing since Sept. 1, were sent to the hospital in good condition Saturday after an elk hunter discovered the trio on a remote forest road in South County.

At 10:16 a.m., the hunter called the Douglas County 9-1-1 center saying he had located the missing people and their 2005 PT Cruiser. The caller said Sharon Buchanan, 70, died prior to him locating the vehicle.

Melvin Hawkins, 86, and Alice Hawkins, 80, were given a ride by the hunter to meet a nearby ambulance.

Deputies were directed to the location of the vehicle by the hunter. Further examination showed that the vehicle was high-centered on a remote road off of Upper Cow Creek Road.

The discovery came less than 10 days after the three left for a drive Sept. 1 and were were reported missing two days later. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue searched unsuccessfully for the missing trio.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office has been notified as well as Buchanan’s family members.

Always tell people where you are going. Unforeseen things can and do happen. Be safe but be smart too. Take a cell phone and remember to turn it on. Always have a backup plan.
