President Donald Trump addressed the nation Tuesday night from the Oval Office to make his case for $5.7 billion in funding for a wall on the southern border.

News-Review readers reacted to the address by the president:

Marie Rasmussen of Roseburg — “I don’t support anything he does. I thought it was shallow. It was using our worst fears. Telling stories about the worst things that happen on immigration, and it’s not going to stop them. We need to address the people who use the drugs they bring in and some of the other things on this side of the wall.”

Edward Nielsen of Roseburg — “Well, you know, I kinda like what ol’ Trump has to say. I think he’s doing what needs to be done. In fact, I’ve emailed our wonderful Sen. Ron Wyden and told him to go along with it and step up to the plate. Of course, you don’t get a response from those kinds of characters. It’s the same old crap. Nothing is getting done.”

Duane Corwin of Roseburg — “I’m not fully in favor of shutting down the government in order to get the wall. I do believe that he’s been unfairly opposed to get the wall though. I think that he’ll have a little more sympathy for the wall, because of the motive that he presented for having it. He’s trying to reduce the hurt and the pain for not only the people here whose jobs are threatened by illegal immigration, but also for the immigrants themselves.”

Henry Butler of Canyonville — “I can’t say anything positive about it. He’s an embarrassment to our country. People who are out of work because of his stubbornness, that takes it to a different level that people can see how selfish and cruel he is. I think a lot of people who supported him regret their former positions. I think it’s ridiculous that the senate won’t take up the bill that passed the house which was the same as the Republican bill the last time the bill passed the house. To say that they won’t entertain it is ridiculous. There are others that I know who are personally affected and I feel sorry that they are going through this for no good reason.”

Paul Lovemark of Sutherlin — “I kind of washed my hands of the whole Democratic Party. It’s a shame that they don’t have enough common sense to get together and get something done. Just because you don’t like somebody doesn’t mean he isn’t doing a good job. There’s people that don’t like him, but he’s done a hell of a lot for the country. I felt like he made really good points, but I don’t know if it’s going to do any good. I think the only way he’s going to get his wall built is do it himself, using his presidential authority and take the money from the military and build that wall.”

Carol Plato of Sutherlin — “We dislike him immensely and I thought it was disgusting, I thought it was all just fearmongering.”

Roger Pritchett of Canyonville — “It was a waste of time. I feel Trump caused all of this. A lot of people are out of work because of this.”

Jerry Murphy of Canyonville — “It wasn’t anything I haven’t heard before. It’s all the same and I’m all for it, for border security.”

Lynn Ulam of Canyonville — “I think he’s right. At one time, we needed them in the country, but we don’t need people from all over, from every country coming across the border by the thousands. Yeah, the country’s producing jobs, but it can’t produce that many jobs. Most of the things he does, you either like him, or you hate him. He isn’t going to change his mind. The people who agree with him have always agreed with him. That’s why he was elected. The ones that don’t, it doesn’t matter what he does or what he says. Until it affects their paycheck, they aren’t going to listen to him. Until it does, then they’ll listen to him. I don’t think he’ll sway public opinion one way or another.”

That dim witted, oxidized relic Pelosi stated, "It's a manufactured crisis on the border!" How does one deal with that type of mentality? Has she ever even SEEN a border besides the one surrounding her mansion's flower garden? Ask any border patrol officer if there's a crisis on our borders Pelosi. They arrest potential Democratic voters there daily! Maybe that bucket of vomit Michael Moron will come out of seclusion, and make another "Blockbuster" documentary entitled, "Bowling for Borders!" God save us from the Demoncratic Party!

Actually the families who are crossing the border are seeking asylum (which is legal nationally and internationally) and these people are turning themselves into the Border Patrol agents, as required by the law for asylum seekers.

Trump is great. Next to Reagan he’s the best. The only guy in office that does what he says and doesn’t care at all about bad press. It’s about time. Go Donald!

If we do not stop the illegal immigration, this country will cease to exist as we know it. Period.

And of course you realize that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are people who came by air and overstayed their visas. How exactly will a big wall fix that?

If Hillary had become president and wanted a border wall they'd already be in the process of construction. The entire issue with the Democrats isn't the border issue, it's the Trump issue. They can't get over the fact that Hillary lost an "unlosable" election to a non-politician.

Hillary wanted a modernization of our immigration law. And, FYI, the people who voted for Hillary have gone way past moaning about her loss.
But you are absolutely right about the "Trump issue." The guy is pond scum.

America loves reality shows and childish drama, so we've got Trump as President. We don't want to be governed, we want to be entertained. For the good of the country, there is no difference between D's and R's. It's the intellectually lazy yelling at their TV that is the problem with American politics.

So if he wanted a wall so desperately why didn't he get it when he had control of both the Senate and the House? He had two years. Now all of a sudden it's an emergency? Gimme a break.

MasterofthePatriots

The shut down is only about 2 weeks old and people are declaring the end of the world. Perhaps we all need to save more and get by with less so we can be somewhat prepared for the unknown. We can all do more to cut our expenses. Everyone should have at least 2 months of money saved. Stuff happens.
