A North Bend man is dead after a vehicle crash on Highway 42 just west of Camas Valley, according to police.

At approximately 3 p.m., police say a black 2008 Ford Edge SUV, which was traveling westbound on the freeway left the road for an unknown reason and struck a male pedestrian who was standing off the roadway taking photos.

The pedestrian, who was later identified as Donald Dickinson, 61, of North Bend, was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, but was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the SUV, Paul Arnoldi, of Langolis, was transported to Mercy Medical Center for serious injuries. He was later transported by air ambulance to Sacred Heard Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.

State police were assisted at the scene by Camas Valley Fire, Tenmile Fire, Douglas County Fire District No. 2 and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Give someone the technology to take a picture anywhere, and they’ll do it near a major highway. An interesting story never starts with a good idea.

Will there be an update when more info is available?
