Rep. Gary Leif, R-Roseburg, was sworn in as representative for House District 2 Wednesday afternoon at the state capitol in Salem.

Leif was chosen interim representative by county commissioners from the district, which covers Roseburg, South Douglas County and portions of Jackson and Josephine counties.

He'll serve in the position at least until the end of the year. Leif will face Democratic challenger Megan Salter of Roseburg in the November election.

Leif replaces Winston Republican Dallas Heard, who was recently sworn in as interim state senator for Senate District 1. Heard replaced Roseburg Republican Jeff Kruse, who stepped down in March following allegations of sexual harassment.

In order to take his new post, Leif had to step down as a Douglas County commissioner. The two remaining commissioners, Tim Freeman and Chris Boice, will appoint an interim commissioner to fill the seat.
