Douglas County will join the rest of the nation in honoring the men and women who died serving their country with a variety of activities in several locations.

In honor of the holiday, schools, banks, post offices and government offices will be closed Monday.

Here is a list of some local events:


A Memorial Day Tribute will be held at 10 a.m. at the Glide Veteran Memorial Wall near the Glide Community Center, 20062 North Umpqua Highway, Glide. The event includes a wreath-laying ceremony, bagpiper, bugler and poetry reading. For more information, visit


The Sutherlin Lions will gather with the public at 9 a.m. to lay a wreath at the Veterans Memorial in Central Park.


The Roseburg National Cemetery, on the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus, is hosting its traditional ceremony. Tributes will begin at 11 a.m. at the flagpole, featuring the laying of wreaths, speakers, patriotic music, a reading of “In Flanders Field” and more. The Memorial Day Picnic, hosted by American Legion Post 16, will follow the tribute at the Stewart Park Pavilion in Roseburg. Veterans and their families are encouraged to attend and eat free. Donations will be accepted.

Myrtle Creek-Tri City

American Legion Post 123 will hold its annual Memorial Day Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the Veterans Building, 252 S. Pacific Hwy., Myrtle Creek. The breakfast is free to veterans, with donations accepted. In addition to the breakfast, the post will be placing 190 flags throughout the Myrtle Creek-Tri City area.


The South Umpqua Thacker-Wallace VFW Post 9744 will hold a Veterans Remembrance Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the VFW Veterans Memorial in front of the Canyonville City Hall, 250 N. Main St, Canyonville. The event features speakers, patriotic music and refreshments.


The Memorial Day parade begins at 1:30 p.m. The parade begins at Highland Elementary School, 2605 Longwood Drive, Reedsport. A service will be held at 3:15 p.m. at Hahn Park, 680 Fir Ave.

A veteran meet and greet will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Drive, followed by dinner. Veterans will eat for free and contributions would be gratefully accepted.

A concert will start at 7 p.m. and take place next door to the church at Pacific Auditorium. This concert will feature a variety of traditional and modern patriotic music. The conclusion will recognize all the veterans in attendance. The event is free for all, but contributions are welcomed. Visit for more details.

I served 11 and a half years. In 3 different conflicts ,"Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. My heart goes out to the family members of my fallen comrades. I love every one of them.
