The Roseburg National Cemetery received an Organization of Excellence award last week. It’s one of six veterans cemeteries to receive the award this year. There are 135 cemeteries in the national system.

It’s the first time the Roseburg cemetery has won the award, which is based on evaluation by an independent team. The team considers customer satisfaction surveys, headstone and grounds appearance, daily cleanliness of customer facilities, equipment and facility maintenance and safety for visitors and employees.

Cemetery Director Andrew Matthews called the award an extraordinary accomplishment by a hard-working and dedicated cemetery team.

“We’re honored to serve veterans and families in a national shrine,” he said in a written statement. “We’d like to thank all our partners in the community and beyond for helping us serve and fulfill our promise to veterans every day.”

The cemetery had previously been recognized for superior performance on the 2015 Survey of Satisfaction with national cemeteries. That award went to 16 cemeteries that year. It’s based on surveys sent by an independent third party to funeral homes the cemetery served in that year.
