Beginning Friday, veterans with appointments at the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center will be able to receive text reminders on their cell phones.

The VEText reminder program will also offer veterans the chance to confirm or cancel appointments via text.

Veterans who want text reminders simply need to provide VA staff with their current cell phone number. The reminders will then occur automatically.

According to the VA, veterans miss more than 9 million health care appointments nationwide each year. The new system will help veterans remember appointments, and, if they cancel, will give the VA a chance to offer any newly opened appointment times to other veterans.
