Retired United States Marine Corps Sgt. Eugene Attaway and his wife Lori Attaway of Roseburg participate in a Wreaths Across America event at the Roseburg National Cemetery Annex in 2016.

Wreath ceremony set to honor veterans

The Roseburg National Cemetery will host a holiday wreath-laying ceremony at noon Saturday at the Roseburg National Cemetery Annex, 913 NW Garden Valley Blvd.

Seven wreaths will be laid, one for each branch of the service and one for POW/MIAs. Members of the public are also invited to help lay their own wreaths both at the cemetery annex and the main cemetery on Harvard Avenue. Anyone wanting to lay a wreath should join organizers at 10:30 a.m.

The Wreaths Across America ceremony is one of many that will be held across the country. The event began with the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, which began donating holiday wreaths to the Arlington National Cemetery in 1992.

Since 2006, the wreaths have also been given as tributes to veterans laid to rest at national and state veterans cemeteries across the country.

The Patriot Guard Riders are coordinating the event.
