David Scott McKenzie, age 61, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at home, surrounded by family. David was born on Aug. 9, 1960, in North Bend, Oregon, to parents Chesley “Chet” McKenzie and Floretta Imogene “Ima” Eakin. He was preceded in death by his father Chet, mother Ima, step-father Merle Eakin, sister Jo Ellen (McKenzie) Hendricks, and brother-in-law Richard Hendricks. He is survived by his wife Leota “Rose” McKenzie, their five children and their spouses, six grandchildren, his four siblings, and extended family members.

David was an avid mountain man. His career as a timber faller and forester began in the 70’s and led him to become a skilled sawyer, navigator of the most remote mountains, and mushroom hunter. As a second career, he took up mushroom buying, and built a tight-knit community who came to know him as family.

His stories, enthusiasm for adventure, love of Mother Earth, and laugh will be missed by all. While he loved to be alone in the woods, he came alive when surrounded by his family and friends, with a cold Hamm’s in hand.

A celebration of life will be held for family at a later date.
