GOLD BEACH — The Camas Valley Hornets came up short in their Special District 1 Central eight-man football game with the Gold Beach Panthers on Friday, losing 34-8.
Camas Valley dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in league.
The Panthers (5-2, 2-1), who led 8-0 at halftime, outgained the Hornets 431-215. Quarterback Trenton Storns carried the ball 22 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns and completed 6 of 9 passes for 163 yards and one TD. Jake Westerman caught five balls for 153 yards and one TD.
Sophomore James Standley was C.V.'s top rusher with 75 yards on 14 carries and Seth Lamell added 45 yards on seven attempts, scoring C.V.'s only TD on a 5-yard run in the third quarter. Senior quarterback/safety Jared Standley returned to the field after missing a couple of games (burst appendix).
Kamalu Swift led the Hornets defensively with 12 tackles and Jared Standley was in on 11 stops. Camas Valley lost defensive end Owen Koegler (shoulder) and running back/linebacker River Wolfe (ankle) to injuries during the contest.
"The kids played hard. Our defense played solid, but we struggled in the red zone (offensively)," C.V. coach Keri Ewing said. "They busted a couple of big plays in the second half."
The Hornets, who still have a chance at postseason play, travel to Myrtle Point Thursday.
