SALEM — "It was a good wakeup call for us," Sutherlin girls basketball coach Josh Grotting said.

Gervais, the top-ranked team in the OSAA Class 2A coaches poll, handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 41-39, on Friday in the Crusader Classic hosted by Salem Academy.

Sutherlin is No. 1 in the 3A coaches poll.

Izzy Boyd led the Cougars with 15 points and Sofia Contreras added 12.

Junior guard Micah Wicks was the lone Sutherlin player in double figures with 19 points. Wicks missed a shot in the closing seconds that could've tied the contest. Madison Wagner chipped in six points in the loss.

Grotting said lack of rebounding cost his team.

"We didn't deserve to win. Their physicality hurt us and we gave them a lot of second chance opportunities," the coach said.
